    Characterizing latency overheads in the deployment of FPGA accelerators

    FPGA hardware accelerators have recently enjoyed significant attention as platforms for further accelerating computation in the datacenter but they potentially add additional layers of hardware and software interfacing that can further increase communication latency. In this paper, we characterize these overheads for streaming applications where latency can be an important consideration. We examine the latency and throughput characteristics of traditional server-based PCIe connected accelerators, and the more recent approach of network attached FPGA accelerators. We additionally quantify the additional overhead introduced by virtualising accelerators on FPGAs

    Modelling and characterisation of distributed hardware acceleration

    Hardware acceleration has become more commonly utilised in networked computing systems. The growing complexity of applications mean that traditional CPU architectures can no longer meet stringent latency constraints. Alternative computing architectures such as GPUs and FPGAs are increasingly available, along with simpler, more software-like development flows. The work presented in this thesis characterises the overheads associated with these accelerator architectures. A holistic view encompassing both computation and communication latency must be considered. Experimental results obtained through this work show that networkattached accelerators scale better than server-hosted deployments, and that host ingestion overheads are comparable to network traversal times in some cases. Along with the choice of processing platforms, it is becoming more important to consider how workloads are partitioned and where in the network tasks are being performed. Manual allocation and evaluation of tasks to network nodes does not scale with network and workload complexity. A mathematical formulation of this problem is presented within this thesis that takes into account all relevant performance metrics. Unlike other works, this model takes into account growing hardware heterogeneity and workload complexity, and is generalisable to a range of scenarios. This model can be used in an optimisation that generates lower cost results with latency performance close to theoretical maximums compared to naive placement approaches. With the mathematical formulation and experimental results that characterise hardware accelerator overheads, the work presented in this thesis can be used to make informed design decisions about both where to allocate tasks and deploy accelerators in the network, and the associated costs

    A model for distributed in-network and near-edge computing with heterogeneous hardware

    Applications that involve analysis of data from distributed networked data sources typically involve computation performed centrally in a datacenter or cloud environment, with some minor pre-processing potentially performed at the data sources. As these applications grow in scale, this centralized approach leads to potentially impractical bandwidth requirements and computational latencies. This has led to interest in edge computing, where processing is moved nearer to the data sources, and recently, in-network computing, where processing is done as data progresses through the network. This paper presents a model for reasoning about distributed computing at the edge and in the network, with support for heterogeneous hardware and alternative software and hardware accelerator implementations. Unlike previous distributed computing models, it considers the cost of computation for compute-intensive applications, supports a variety of hardware platforms, and considers a heterogeneous network. The model is flexible and easily extensible for a range of applications and scales, and considers a variety of metrics. We use the model to explore the key factors that influence where computational capability should be placed and what platforms should be considered for distributed applications

    Together with the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies (COSLA), the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) embarked on a year-long exploration of the continuing education (CE) needs of staff at state library agencies (SLA) and libraries to identify challenges and opportunities and recommend ways for improving the CE landscape as a strategy to transforming serving teens through libraries.  This project was funded through a National Forum grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services

    A carbon-enhanced metal-poor damped Lyα system: probing gas from Population III nucleosynthesis?

    We present high-resolution observations of an extremely metal-poor damped Lyα system (DLA), at z_(abs) = 2.340 0972 in the spectrum of the QSO J0035−0918, exhibiting an abundance pattern consistent with model predictions for the supernova yields of Population III stars. Specifically, this DLA has [Fe/H]≃−3, shows a clear ‘odd–even’ effect, and is C-rich with [C/Fe]=+1.53, a factor of ∼20 greater than reported in any other DLA. In analogy to the carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars in the Galactic halo (with [C/Fe] > +1.0), this is the first known case of a carbon-enhanced DLA. We determine an upper limit to the mass of ^(12)C, M(^(12)C) ≤ 200 M_⊙, which depends on the unknown gas density n(H); if n(H) > 1 cm^(−3) (which is quite likely for this DLA given its low velocity dispersion), then M(^(12)C) ≤ 2 M_⊙, consistent with pollution by only a few prior supernovae. We speculate that DLAs such as the one discovered here may represent the ‘missing link’ between the yields of Population III stars and their later incorporation in the class of carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars which show no enhancement of neutron-capture elements (CEMP-no stars)

    Sympathetic Responses to Central Hypovolemia: New Insights from Microneurographic Recordings

    Hemorrhage remains a major cause of mortality following traumatic injury in both military and civilian settings. Lower body negative pressure (LBNP) has been used as an experimental model to study the compensatory phase of hemorrhage in conscious humans, as it elicits central hypovolemia like that induced by hemorrhage. One physiological compensatory mechanism that changes during the course of central hypovolemia induced by both LBNP and hemorrhage is a baroreflex-mediated increase in muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA), as assessed with microneurography. The purpose of this review is to describe recent results obtained using microneurography in our laboratory as well as those of others that have revealed new insights into mechanisms underlying compensatory increases in MSNA during progressive reductions in central blood volume and how MSNA is altered at the point of hemodynamic decompensation. We will also review recent work that has compared direct MSNA recordings with non-invasive surrogates of MSNA to determine the appropriateness of using such surrogates in assessing the clinical status of hemorrhaging patients

    On the Lack of Correlation Between [OIII]/[OII] and Lyman-Continuum Escape Fraction

    We present the first results of our pilot study of 8 photometrically selected Lyman continuum (LyC) emitting galaxy candidates from the COSMOS field and focus on their optical emission line ratios. Observations were performed in the H and K bands using the Multi-Object Spectrometer for Infra-Red Exploration (MOSFIRE) instrument at the Keck Observatory, targeting the [OII], Hβ\beta, and [OIII] emission lines. We find that photometrically selected LyC emitting galaxy candidates have high ionization parameters, based on their high [OIII]/[OII] ratios (O32), with an average ratio for our sample of 2.5±\pm0.2. Preliminary results of our companion Low Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (LRIS) observations, targeting LyC and Lyα\alpha, show that those galaxies with the largest O32 are typically found to also be Lyα\alpha emitters. High O32 galaxies are also found to have tentative non-zero LyC escape fractions (fesc(LyC)f_{esc}(LyC)) based on uu band photometric detections. These results are consistent with samples of highly ionized galaxies, including confirmed LyC emitting galaxies from the literature. We also perform a detailed comparison between the observed emission line ratios and simulated line ratios from density bounded HII_{\textrm{II}} regions modeled using the photoionization code MAPPINGS V. Estimates of fesc(LyC)f_{esc}(LyC) for our sample fall in the range from 0.0-0.23 and suggest possible tension with published correlations between O32 and fesc(LyC)f_{esc}(LyC), adding weight to dichotomy of arguments in the literature. We highlight the possible effects of clumpy geometry and mergers that may account for such tension.Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Detection of Two Interstellar Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons via Spectral Matched Filtering

    Ubiquitous unidentified infrared emission bands are seen in many astronomical sources. Although these bands are widely, if not unanimously, attributed to the collective emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, no single species from this class has been detected in space. We present the discovery of two -CN functionalized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, 1- and 2-cyanonaphthalene, in the interstellar medium aided by spectral matched filtering. Using radio observations with the Green Bank Telescope, we observe both bi-cyclic ring molecules in the molecular cloud TMC-1. We discuss potential in situ gas-phase formation pathways from smaller organic precursor molecules

    Overdensities of Y-dropout Galaxies from the Brightest-of-Reionizing Galaxies Survey: A Candidate Protocluster at Redshift z~8

    Theoretical and numerical modeling of dark-matter halo assembly predicts that the most luminous galaxies at high redshift are surrounded by overdensities of fainter companions. We test this prediction with HST observations acquired by our Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies (BoRG) survey, which identified four very bright z~8 candidates as Y-dropout sources in four of the 23 non-contiguous WFC3 fields observed. We extend here the search for Y-dropouts to fainter luminosities (M_* galaxies with M_AB\sim-20), with detections at >5sigma confidence (compared to >8sigma confidence adopted earlier) identifying 17 new candidates. We demonstrate that there is a correlation between number counts of faint and bright Y-dropouts at >99.84% confidence. Field BoRG58, which contains the best bright z\sim8 candidate (M_AB=-21.3), has the most significant overdensity of faint Y-dropouts. Four new sources are located within 70arcsec (corresponding to 3.1 comoving Mpc at z=8) from the previously known brighter z\sim8 candidate. The overdensity of Y-dropouts in this field has a physical origin to high confidence (p>99.975%), independent of completeness and contamination rate of the Y-dropout selection. We modeled the overdensity by means of cosmological simulations and estimate that the principal dark matter halo has mass M_h\sim(4-7)x10^11Msun (\sim5sigma density peak) and is surrounded by several M_h\sim10^11Msun halos which could host the fainter dropouts. In this scenario, we predict that all halos will eventually merge into a M_h>2x10^14Msun galaxy cluster by z=0. Follow-up observations with ground and space based telescopes are required to secure the z\sim8 nature of the overdensity, discover new members, and measure their precise redshift.Comment: Minor revision: ApJ accepted [17 pages (emulateapj style), 7 figures, 2 tables

    Picturing the nation : The Celtic periphery as discursive other in the archaeological displays of the museum of Scotland

    Using the archaeological displays at the Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, this paper examines the exhibition as a site of identity creation through the negotiations between categories of same and Other. Through an analysis of the poetics of display, the paper argues that the exhibition constructs a particular relationship between the Celtic Fringe and Scottish National identity that draws upon the historical discourses of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland as a place and a time \u27apart\u27. This will be shown to have implications for the display of archaeological material in museums but also for contemporary understandings of Scottish National identity. <br /
